----- 4D Email Group -----
---------------------------------------------------------------
This email group was created to provide users and developers a
forum to ask questions, bounce ideas, and expand members
knowledge of ACI's 4th Dimension. This is an informal group,
with no rules except proper email etiquette.
If you are in doubt of what proper email etiquette entails
either do:
an anonymous FTP to isig.mit.edu, and get the file
Primer/usenet-primer.
There are other very useful Internet based documents in
the /Primer directory.
or if you *don't* have FTP access send a request to:
sholden@cod.nosc.mil for the usenet-primer
---------------------------------------------------------------
How many people are in the group? (as of May 1993): 330
Increase since Jan. 1993: 123
What is the make-up of the group? (approximation):
Jan. 1993 May 1993
Education 49% 43%
Commercial 18% 25%
Military 3% 2%
Government 6% 5%
Other* 24% 25%
* sites that do not end in .edu, .com, .mil, and .gov.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Subscription from Internet:
To subscribe to ACI 4D digest, send the command:
subscribe 4d-digest
in the body of a message to "majordomo@isig.mit.edu." If you
want to subscribe something other than the account the mail
is coming from, such as a local redistribution list, then
append that address to the "subscribe" command; for example,
to subscribe "4d-hackers":
subscribe 4d-digest 4d-hackers@your.domain.net
If you prefer to receive each message instead of a digest,
you should send the command "subscribe 4d" in the body of a
message to "majordomo@isig.mit.edu."
Posting to the whole group from Internet:
Mail your post to:
4d@isig.mit.edu
If you have any problems with the mailing list, please contact:
- 4d-owner@isig.mit.edu
---------------------------------------------------------------
Subscription from non-Internet sources:
To subscribe from CompuServe (CI$) you need to send an

'Send to:' prompt)
To subscribe from America On-Line (AOL) you need to send
an message in this format:
majordomo@isig.mit.edu (entered in the normal

There are now two 4D ftp sites:
The first is at:
- sumex-aim.stanford.edu (36.44.0.6)
Everything is in the directory:
- info-mac/dev/a4d (which is read only)
Send uploads and questions to:
- breck@kirk.ecs.umass.edu (Liam Breck)
If you are having troubles contact:
- Liam at above address, or
- Info-Mac-Request@sumex-aim.stanford.edu
This archive is accesible by anonymous ftp to it and its
mirror sites around the world (wuarchive@wustl.edu is a
US mirror). It can also be accessed with gopher and the
Internet email ftp server.
The second is at:
- bu.edu or (128.197.27.7)
Everything is in the directory:
- /mac/4d
Send uploads or if you are having problems to:
- kalena@bu.edu (Karen R. Sabog)
The bu.edu site is a mirror ftp site for the 4d
directory at sumex-aim. Also, the bu.edu site contains
textual information like educational and retail prices, ACI
software updates when permitted, product descriptions,
press releases, etc.
By the summer of 1993 there should be gopher and WAIS
access to the 4D files and information.

The group is currently in the process of creating a Frequently
